A princely outing: The Hankook iON Race heads to Monaco

Seoul, Korea, April 23, 2024 – Round eight of this season’s ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in the principality of Monaco is the next highlight for the Hankook iON Race. On the 27th of April, the spotlight in the second-smallest country in the world will be on the fully electric racing series. The 3.337-kilometer circuit, which features world-famous turns like La Rascasse, Casino Square, and Grand Hotel Hairpin, is one of the longest on the 2024 Formula E calendar. The 22 drivers must negotiate 19 corners and some narrow streets, as the season reaches the halfway point in the city-state on the French Mediterranean coast.

“We saw last year that different track surfaces, up and downhill passages, and extreme banking in the tunnel really put the Hankook iON Race through its paces – but do not put it under too much strain. The drivers can depend on the impressive performance of the tire. The many corners and lack of long straights mean the average speed is lower than it has been so far this season. The main job for the drivers is to get the tire up to the ideal temperature quickly, and to keep it there,” says Hankook Formula E race engineer Thomas Baltes.

As he did last year, Germany’s Pascal Wehrlein from the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team travels to the Monaco E-Prix as the championship leader. However, he shares the top spot in the table with Jake Dennis. The Andretti Formula E driver also has 89 points to his name. They are followed by Britain’s Oliver Rowland (Nissan Formula E Team, 80 points), who won the Saturday race in Misano, and last year’s winner Nick Cassidy from New Zealand (Jaguar TCS Racing) with 76 points. The 29-year-old took full advantage of the strong performance of the Hankook iON Race in Monaco in 2023, gaining eight places in the race to take the checkered flag after 29 laps of racing. “The Hankook’s tire was really very consistent and did not wear much,” said Cassidy after the race.

Few advertising slogans from the automotive industry are better suited to the Hankook iON Race than the famous line from German manufacturer Volkswagen. “Since our debut in the Formula E World Championship in Mexico City last year, the Hankook iON Race has performed superbly and with great reliability everywhere and in all conditions. However, the most impressive thing is the fact that we have not suffered a single puncture, for which we were responsible, in 23 races. And that is despite the different track surfaces and ambient temperatures ranging from single figures to a scorching 40 degrees Celsius. Whether in the rain, dust, or sand in the Saudi Arabian desert or on the bumps and jumps in Japan: the Hankook iON Race runs and runs and runs,” says Hankook Motorsport Director Manfred Sandbichler, summing up the outstanding performance of the quality Formula E tire.

On the up with the Hankook iON Race: the performance and high grip levels delivered by the Hankook iON Race allowed Jake Dennis to set a new benchmark at the Misano E-Prix: no driver gained more positions over the course of the two races. The Brit climbed 15 positions on Saturday and seven on Sunday.

Other drivers also took full advantage of the plentiful grip on offer to pull off their overtaking maneuver. For example, Dan Ticktum (ERT Formula E Team) gained a total of 15 places, and Jehan Daruvala (Maserati MSG Racing) 14 on the Hankook iON Race.

Heated battles, exciting races, and the Hankook iON Race thrilled spectators, as Misano on the Adriatic coast hosted a double-header in the Formula E World Championship for the first time. In perfect conditions, with glorious blue skies and roughly 25 degrees Celsius on both race days, the 22 drivers treated fans in Italy to two thrilling races at the 3.382-kilometer Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Saturday’s winner was Oliver Rowland, while Pascal Wehrlein lifted the winner’s trophy on Sunday.
